I wake early, extremely sticky and sore. It feels wonderful. Darlene is curled up in a ball and asleep in my arms, my right arm cradling her head and neck and the other wrapped around her body with the palm resting comfortably on her breastbone. Charles is asleep behind me; I had been asleep in his arms. The three of us take up three-quarters of the queen-sized bed, and the rollaway holds discarded clothes and sheets.

There is a faint light coming in through the curtains but otherwise I can’t tell what time it is. Any number between 5 and 11 a.m. would not surprise me at all.

With sincerest apologies to Rogers and Hammerstein, I want to sing out: “I am

in love, in love, in love with a wonderful guy—and girl!” No morning after has even been such a beginning before, and we’re well on our way to finding three-way love together.

Second Chances

Business at the bookstore lulled. Peter swirled around in his chair amid heaping stacks of dog-eared books with yellow pages and checked his e-mail. His additional free time was one of the many luxuries Peter enjoyed in working for himself. He had only himself to answer to, and a host of intriguing customers strolling through the door each day. Very often, cute young men would darken the door; and Peter would shoot subtle—and, at times, not-so-subtle—glances at these strangers from behind wooden shelves. These men Pete spied were generally unshaven guys, who bought their clothes at thrift stores, wore trendy glasses, and enjoyed literary tastes like Margaret Atwood and Joyce Carol Oates.

Peter had one unread message from Dale Edwards. He gasped.

From: [email protected]

Hey man! Long time no see!

I’m in the Niagara area if you want to meet up tonight. I’m thinking of doing Pizza Hut. You still love Pizza Hut, right? I’m thinking maybe 7ish. Can you make it?

Hope to C U then!

Peter’s heart sank. As badly as he wanted to reply, he didn’t know how to answer—

or if he had the guts to do it. Facing Dale again would bring back a lot of pain. Even when a novel set in the same region Dale was from crossed Peter’s desk, he couldn’t bear to open the first page.

Life was different since Peter last saw Dale. He’d finished University, opened his own second-hand bookstore, come out of the closet, and felt truly successful. But despite the abundance of attractive men frequenting his store, Peter didn’t feel he could 70

love someone the way he’d loved Dale. He fought desperately at the time not to call it love. What use was there in falling in love with a straight guy? Dale had a girlfriend and, unaware of Peter’s feelings for him, told his friend in great detail about his sexual relations with her.

Peter’s finger felt heavy on the mouse before clicking the reply button. He wanted to meet Dale for dinner. Now that Peter was out of the closet, he could tell Dale about the intense love he’d felt all those years.
